Muitas religio\u0303es acreditam que existe um lugar – um outro mundo – que possibilita a continuac\u0327a\u0303o da vida apo\u0301s a morte, onde a alma pode ser salva da sua condic\u0327a\u0303o material. A arte, tendo surgido por meio de mitos, magia e religia\u0303o, manteve uma relac\u0327a\u0303o pro\u0301xima com estas narrativas durante muitos se\u0301culos. No entanto, depois de um logo processo de secularizac\u0327a\u0303o, a arte, em certa insta\u0302ncia, ainda mante\u0301m a sua aura sagrada, trazendo ao de cima ideias espirituais, mas tambe\u0301m uma possibilidade de existe\u0302ncia post mortem.<\/p>\n

Em \u201cThe Artworld\u201d, Athur Danto definiu o mundo da arte como \u201cum mundo que esta\u0301 para o mundo real, assim como a cidade dos ce\u0301us esta\u0301 para a cidade terrena\u201d. Para Danto, os trabalhos arti\u0301sticos \u2013 se assim reconhecidos pelo espectador – sa\u0303o \u201ctransfigurados\u201d num reino ontolo\u0301gico distante, completamente afastado e diferente do mundo fi\u0301sico e real. Por outro lado, a dimensa\u0303o escultural do trabalho de Carolina Serrano indaga sobre as possi\u0301veis maneiras de usar o tempo como mate\u0301ria, explorando as possibilidades teo\u0301ricas, conceptuais e materiais da parafina tingida de negro, um material facilmente malea\u0301vel atrave\u0301s fogo. Este elemento esta\u0301 presente desde o primeiro momento da exposic\u0327a\u0303o na se\u0301rie Invisible drawings. Os trac\u0327os semelhantes a chamas marcados nas folhas de cera negra so\u0301 podem ser vistos se o espectador tentar encontrar a luz e a inclinac\u0327a\u0303o certas para os conseguir ver \u2013 uma procura metafo\u0301rica e fi\u0301sica da \u201cluz\u201d, que exige do espectador um papel activo no processo de criac\u0327a\u0303o das sucessivas esculturas. Quando acesa, a vela e\u0301 sacrificada pela verticalidade da chama e este objecto inanimado \u201cganha\u201d tempo, tornando-se mortal. Neste sentido, as velas tornaram-se um substituto simbo\u0301lico do sacrifi\u0301cio de animais aos Deuses, uma pra\u0301tica milenar. Quando usadas em contextos rituali\u0301sticos, as velas substituem as pessoas que as acederam: mesmo quando se abandona o local da oferta, a vela continua a queimar, mantendo viva a prece inerente a ela. Portanto, ao mesmo tempo que a vela se torna mortal, adquire tambe\u0301m uma dimensa\u0303o metafi\u0301sica perpe\u0301tua; um vislumbre da eternidade.<\/p>\n

Da mesma forma, o elemento mortal dentro de algumas das esculturas da artista permitem que elas existam em duas dimenso\u0303es temporais: uma finita, e outra que e\u0301 impossi\u0301vel de medir, isto e\u0301, um tempo transcendental, mais glorioso e eterno do que aquele que experienciamos no quotidiano, mais pro\u0301ximo do \u201ctempo da arte\u201d. Se a vulnerabilidade das esculturas para com o fogo e\u0301 reconhecida pelo observador, ela concede a\u0300s obras um poder de se transformarem num espelho da pro\u0301pria condic\u0327a\u0303o humana, criando um segundo momento de \u201ctransubstanciac\u0327a\u0303o\u201d, desta vez, do espectador dentro da escultura. Logo, o observador, ao identificar nas esculturas o elemento mortal latente, abre as portas para a possibilidade das esculturas serem \u201cvistas\u201d de uma forma diferente, para serem derretidas e repetidamente destrui\u0301das pela nossa (in)extingui\u0301vel chama interior, tornando-as sempre prestes a terminar e a comec\u0327ar de novo.<\/p>\n
