Maria Appleton (b. 1997) is a Portuguese artist based in Lisbon. Her practice explores the interplay of color and form through techniques such as dyeing, weaving, and printmaking. She creates layered compositions using cotton, silk, and industrial fabrics, producing vibrant abstract transparencies that respond to light and spatial interactions.
Her work investigates liminal spaces, both emotional and physical, where geometric codes and chromatic imprints converge to form cartographic compositions connected to collective memory. By negotiating the balance between tangible presence and symbolic absence, Appleton’s work evokes sensations, dreams, and recollections, engaging with the architecture of both public and private realms.
Appleton studied at Camberwell College of Arts and Chelsea College of Arts in London. She has exhibited in solo shows at Galeria Foco (2025 & 2021), Appleton BOX (2025); Espacio Tacuarí-Vergez Collection, Buenos Aires (2024); Casa da Cerca, Almada (2024); Hatch, Paris (2023); and art fairs like ARCO lisbon (2025); Artissima (2024); ARCO madrid (2021) among others.
She participated in residencies at Albers Foundation, Connecticut US (2026); Cortéx Frontal, Arraiolos (2025); CAB Foundation, Brussels (2024) Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris (2022), supported by the Institut Français and Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian and Emma Kreativcentrum, Pforzheim, Germany (2021).
Her work is part of several Portuguese and international public and private collections, including the António Cachola Collection (PT), CAB Foundation (BE), “La Caixa” Foundation (ES), Frac MÉCA Collection (FR), Vergez Collection (AR), and the Portuguese State Contemporary Art Collection-CACE (PT).
